"WE ARE THE SPIRIT OF LOLITA LEBRON," said artist Lillian Mulero on March 1, 2016, when she organized a demonstration starting at the Plaza de Armas, marching through Old San Juan to the Capital building overlooking the sea.
In the SAN JUAN STAR daily newspaper, she was quoted as saying, "I will walk the streets of Old San Juan, dressed as Lolita Lebron, to demonstrate that even today the events of 1950 and the action by Lolita Lebron in Washington D.C., hold a deep resonance with our contemporary story of Puerto Rico and its relationship to the USA."

March 1, 2016, San Juan, PR:
Artist Lillian Mulero prepares for her demonstration march from Plaza de Armas to the Capital building in Old San Juan -- evoking the memory of Lolita Lebron -- she sews the jacket of her costume, a replica of the suit worn by Lebron during her attack on Congress in Washington D.C., March 1, 1950.
DATELINE, SAN JUAN, PR
March 1, 2016 is the 62nd anniversary of the 1954 Puerto Rican Nationalist Party attack on the US House of Representatives by Lolita Lebron, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Irving Flores and Andrés Figueroa Cordero. To commemorate that historic event, I will walk the streets of Old San Juan dressed as Lolita Lebron, to demonstrate that those times hold a deep resonance with our contemporary story – OUR HISTORY – the story of Puerto Rico and its relationship to the USA.
I invite everyone to walk with me, in the spirit of LOLITA, on March 1st staring at 2PM at PLAZA DE ARMAS on the corner of calle San Francisco and calle Cruz and ending in front of the CAPITOL building overlooking the SEA.
I issue a special invitation to the artistic-cultural community – musicians, educators, painters, film-makers, actors, writers and journalists, and all the dancers of our country who have LOVE and PRIDE for the national identity of Puerto Rico.
DO NOT FORGET YOUR HISTORY – OR YOUR CULTURE!
Sincerely,
Lillian Mulero, artist
P.S. Bring musical instruments, steel pots and spoons to add some thunder to the parade. Please bring flowers, palm fronds and elephant-ear branches to decorate the procession.
